The wilton is the noisiest of the three and not quite as smooth as the bader or kmg. the kmg is the stoutest made of the three. belt speed. on all three of these grinders, the motor is the drive wheel. regardless if grinding with a flat platen or a contact wheel, the maximum belt speeds are the same. not so with the burr king or hard core.

Other guys do just fine with 1hp machines. if you have 220vac available, i'd personally go with the 2hp setup, and you'll probably never feel the need for more. if you only have 110vac in your shop, you'll be limited to 1.5hp. i'd still get a 2hp vfd like the kbac 27d, which will give you 1.5hp at 110vac, but still give you room for upgrading.

Before i got my burr king i got good results on a 34 hp 4 x36 from harbor freight, but 2 (and split 1 ) belts do make recurves and hawkhook blades much easier to sharpen. of course you can split 4 and 6 belts narrower as well.

To explain, a true hollow grind, is two arcs, one on each side of a blade, that start at the spine, and intersect at the edge. this makes for an extremely sharp, but also a very delicate bladeedge. what most call a hollow grind these days is just a bastardized version that was made popular way back when buck knives did it on their 110 folder.

Also the belt selection you can order from online for 1x30 or even the 1x42 is so much bigger and readily available. if you are planning to do more wood work, then for sure go for the 4 belt sander as you can hit more material at a time with a larger belt. also stated above there is a reason knifemakers generally use a 2x72.

I think you want both a 12 (or larger) disk and a slack belt grinder. the belt grinder is great for knocking the edges off things. and i'd second mud's suggestion for a multitool if space is limited (have two of them, running different grits, plus another belt grinder). but if you want to preserve geometry, the disk wins.
